The primary reason forusing any type of cleaning preparation in the barrel of a firearmis to remove those agents left behind which would adverselyaffect the accuracy of the particular firearm and its uselife.
If this were not the casewe could shoot endlessly with no recourse but to bring on moreammunition. Unfortunately, firearms have a fatal flaw. Theproducts of combustion and metal fouling from bullet materials,and carbon which is a product of burning powder, produce adeteriorating effect on the accuracy of a given firearm. As theseresidues build up inside the barrel; accuracy decreasesconversely.
It is the removal of thesefour types of fouling: 1. Powder fouling(smokeless or blackpowder) 2. Metal fouling (copper or leadalloy) 3. Carbon , 4. Molybdenum (usually introduced by the useof Molybdenum coated bullets), which will restoreaccuracy in a barrel whose usable life is stillviable.
Most traditional productswere never meant to remove anything other than powderfouling. They were given a pleasant smell, but were totallyin-effective for most problems that cause the loss ofaccuracy.
Loss ofaccuracy is normal in all firearms after they have been used in aprolonged shooting session. The barrel will become fouled with gunpowderresidue as a result of combustion, additionally: two othermaterials are deposited internally to the barrel,……. carbonand metal fouling from bullet material . Most of theshooters today are aware of metal fouling caused by lead alloybullets, and copper jackets. They are also aware that powderfouling will cause the barrel to become dirty and fouled causinginaccuracy.
These two are the most difficultto remove and are the greatest cause for the loss of accuracy ina firearm. However, many are not aware that carbon isprobably the most difficult product of the firing cycle to removefrom the barrel.
In the past the removal ofthese types of barrel fouling has required highly aggressivechemicals such as acid and ammonia. These chemicals have beenapplied in the past on a patch or with a bore brush dipped in thesolution. Then with large amounts of elbow-grease the brush wasstroked back and forth through the barrel to scrub the foulingresidues out. Then a patch was pushed through the bore, and itwas checked for evidence of fouling or the lack thereof . Thisprocess is repeated until all evidence of fouling is no longerpresent on a patch.
The standard practice hasbeen to dunk a copper or bronze brush into the cleaner and strokethe cleaning rod the length of the bore. Worse to scrub the brushback and forth several times.
Without a bore guide and a coated cleaning rod, this is a goodway to damage the bore the throat (where most barrels wear out)and the crown. A good deal of the evidence of foulingremoval comes from the bristles in the bore brushitself.
Many shooters have neverbeen aware that anything more than a few quick passes with somesolvent and a few patches were required to properly clean afouled barrel. Barrels left in this condition will only continueto lose accuracy. We have seen rifles on the used rack which theowners assumed were “shot-out” , which when properlycleaned performed like they were new. When we examined some ofthese guns with a bore-scope, we could see fouling built up inlayers like a black forest cake. Each of these would be a layerof powder fouling and carbon, usually with a layer of copper ontop. I have seen firearms with six or seven of these layers builtup. In every case when these guns were cleaned properly, theaccuracy returned.
A more recent approach has been to product products with heavyamounts of acid and ammonia. Acid and Ammonia willremove metal fouling and carbon. But Acid and Ammonia aredangerous to you and your firearm.
Products containing largeamounts of acids and ammonia still require large amounts ofbrushing. The major problem theyhave is that they contain chemicals which have a horrible smell,and are very dangerous to the steel used in gun barrels. Itis quite easy using these products to permanently damage theinterior of the barrel with pitting. They also can remove stockfinishes.
COMPETITIVE SHOOTERS AND VARMINT HINTERS TAKE SPECIALNOTE
Consider the effect youhave on the barrel of a firearm during a cleaning usingconventional products. Count the number of strokes it takesto clean your rifle using conventional solvents and abrush. Conservatively, you will find the numbersomewhere between 50 to 100 brushstrokes. Now take thenumber of times you clean that firearm during aseason. And finally take that number times the numberof years that you have used thatbarrel. The number of brushstrokes is astronomical.
It isimpossible to introduce the cleaning rod into the barrel of anyfirearm thousands of times ……..without causing seriousdegradation of the quality of the performance of thatbarrel. Compare that with two or three patches percleaning using Wipe-Out™. There is no comparison!
